owst III

The loi des suspects passed in 1858 after Orsini's attempt on the Emperor's life gave Napoleon III and his government unlimited powers to banish, expel or imprison any person suspected of opinions hostile to the Empire. - In Czech the word Kafka means jackdaw, a derivation that Kafka used himself in order to allude to secret connections between himself and the titular figure of his „Hunter Gracchus“ fragments which take place in Riva at Lake Garda (in Italian gracchio means jackdaw). But this is no more than demotic etymology, since the designation Kafka relates back to a low German diminutive of the name Jacob used by Ashkenazi Jews. (H. Binder, Kafka - Ein Leben in Prag, p.31, transl. mine)
