Meine literarische Thätigkeit,
sodann meine musikalische, 1862.

Vor den Osterferien entstand das Gedicht "Ermanarich." In den Ferien der Aufsatz "Fatum und Geschichte." Las sonst Emerson, Büchner in den Anregungen für Kunst etc., fieng in Pforte Schillers aesthetische Erziehung usw. an. Stöckerts Tagebücher am 29 Apr gelesen. Petöfi kennen gelernt. Von Longfellow ausgezeichnetes Gedicht "die alte Uhr" übersetzt von Pertz. Materialismus. Hundstage 1861 beendigt "Schmerz ist der Grundton der Natur", vierhändig. Michaelis viel an der Serbia gearbeitet, zuletzt aufgegeben etwa um Weihnachten. Ungarische Skizzen "die Heideschenke Siegesmarsch, wilde Träume" bis 2 Februar 1862 vollendet, dann bis Ostern "Heldenklage". In Ostern den Plan zum "Merlin" gefaßt. 29 Apr Einleitung componirt "Satan steigt aus der Hölle auf." 30 Apr Gefällt mir nicht mehr; es ist so schwer das Satanische zu treffen und die Kandida richtig zu zeichnen.

Before easter holiday the poem "Ermanarich." During the holidays the essay "Fatum and history." Besides, read Emerson, Büchner in the Anregungen für Kunst [n.b. a contemporary journal] etc., in Pforte began Schiller's aesthetic education and so forth. Read Stöckert's diaries on Apr 29. Became acquainted with Petöfi. Longfellow's excellent poem "the old clock" translated by Pertz. Materialism. Dog days 1861 finished "Pain is the elemental tone of nature", four hands. Michaelmas worked much on the Serbia, last abandonded around Christmas. Hungarian sketches "the inn on the heath victory march, wild dreams" completed by February 2 1862, then the "Hero's Lament" until easter. At easter made plan for the "Merlin". Apr 29 composed the introduction "Satan ascends from Hell." Apr 30 No longer pleases me; it is so difficult to mark the Satanic and to sketch properly the Candida.
