Meine literarische Thätigkeit,
sodann meine musikalische, 1862.
Vor den Osterferien entstand das Gedicht "Ermanarich." In den Ferien der Aufsatz "Fatum und Geschichte." Las sonst Emerson, Büchner in den Anregungen für Kunst etc., fieng in Pforte Schillers aesthetische Erziehung usw. an. Stöckerts Tagebücher am 29 Apr gelesen. Petöfi kennen gelernt. Von Longfellow ausgezeichnetes Gedicht "die alte Uhr" übersetzt von Pertz. Materialismus. Hundstage 1861 beendigt "Schmerz ist der Grundton der Natur", vierhändig. Michaelis viel an der Serbia gearbeitet, zuletzt aufgegeben etwa um Weihnachten. Ungarische Skizzen "die Heideschenke Siegesmarsch, wilde Träume" bis 2 Februar 1862 vollendet, dann bis Ostern "Heldenklage". In Ostern den Plan zum "Merlin" gefaßt. 29 Apr Einleitung componirt "Satan steigt aus der Hölle auf." 30 Apr Gefällt mir nicht mehr; es ist so schwer das Satanische zu treffen und die Kandida richtig zu zeichnen.

Before easter holiday the poem "Ermanarich." During the holidays the essay "Fatum and history." Besides, read Emerson, Büchner in the Anregungen für Kunst [n.b. a contemporary journal] etc., in Pforte began Schiller's aesthetic education and so forth. Read Stöckert's diaries on Apr 29. Became acquainted with Petöfi. Longfellow's excellent poem "
the old clock" translated by Pertz. Materialism. Dog days 1861 finished "Pain is the elemental tone of nature", four hands. Michaelmas worked much on the Serbia, last abandonded around Christmas. Hungarian sketches "the inn on the heath victory march, wild dreams" completed by February 2 1862, then the "Hero's Lament" until easter. At easter made plan for the "Merlin". Apr 29 composed the introduction "Satan ascends from Hell." Apr 30 No longer pleases me; it is so difficult to mark the Satanic and to sketch properly the Candida.

Etwas Ähnliches gab es schon einmal, in den siebziger Jahren, als wir im amerikanischen Kino par excellence, dem Western, alten zornigen Männern bei den Mühen zusahen, die ihnen das Besteigen eines Pferdes machte. Auch damals waren die Jungen mehrfach verschwunden – in einem Krieg, den nachher niemand gewollt haben mochte, in den künstlichen Paradiesen der Popkultur und in den Fallen eines radikalen sozialen Umbaus.
Something similar has occured before, in the seventies, where the paradigm of American cinema, the Western, showed old angry men mounting their horse with great difficulty. Back then, too, the young ones had disappeared - into a war that afterwards nobody claimed to have wanted, into the artificial paradises of popular culture and into the traps of radical social restructuring.

Der Autohersteller Porsche hat ein kostbares Manuskript des Kulturtheoretikers und Schriftstellers Walter Benjamin an das Deutsche Literaturarchiv Marbach übergeben. Bei dem Manuskript handelt es sich um die Schrift "Berliner Kindheit um Neunzehnhundert", die Benjamin 1932 handschriftlich zu Papier brachte. [...] Die kostbare Handschrift ist auf dem Titelblatt Benjamins Sohn Stefan gewidmet, deshalb heißt sie auch das "Stefan-Manuskript".

Jahrhundert, ob mit der Hilfe der Kirche oder des Staates, stets kann das Chaos der menschlichen Naturgeschichte, stets können Aberglauben und Sündhaftigkeit nicht allein durch die Deduktionslogik des verünftigen Kopfes beseitigt werden, sondern nur dann, wenn am Ende auch die Macht zugreift. Entweder “kindliche Liebe” oder “knechtische Furcht” vor der Strafe bahne den Weg zur Vernunft, sagen Wolff und Gottsched, später zieht man beides zum “freudigen Gehorsam” zusammen. Die Allianz der Einheitsvernunft mit der Macht reicht bis in die höchste Ebene: Die rationalistische Aufklärung ist die theoretische Stütze des aufgeklärten Absolutismus gewesen.
Whether in the prehistory of protestantism or during the eighteenth century, whether aided by church or by state, invariably superstition and sinfulness can not be removed by the deductive logic of reason alone, but rather, ultimately only once power intervenes. Either “infantile love” or “servile fear” of punishment paved the way to reason, argue Wolff and Gottsched; later these two are combined to “joyous obedience”. The alliance of unitary reason and power reaches the highest levels: the rationalist enlightenment was the theoretical support of enlightened absolutism.
